The Hits Keep Coming From Kim-Shree Maufas

Well, it’s been just over a year since I wrote about Kim-Shree Maufus and her questionable use of a San Francisco Unified School District credit card. Judging from today’s news, nothing has really changed. While the schools (hey school board – remember that’s supposed to be the main focus of your job) are slashing costs, the board’s annual budget is apparently a mere suggestion.

Over the past four years, the board has increased its budget by 28%. During the 2009-2010 budget, the board spent $492,629, including $22,000 for catered meals prior to board meetings for members and staff; $7,300 for a Portland conference attended by six of seven board members rather than the usual two or three; and $766 in taxis used by one board member during a five-day conference. But more than that, in each of the four years, the board members have spent more than they budgeted to the tune of $58,000 in 2007. Some of the expenses included the following:

  • $766 for 21 taxi rides taken by board member Kim-Shree Maufas during a 2008 conference in Orlando. About $500 of that was submitted for reimbursement last year, 15 months after the conference – even though the district’s policy is that such expenses should be submitted within 15 days. She said the hotel she selected, which cost $12 less per day than those used by other board members, was farther from the conference.
  • $1,500 for six months of babysitting during board meetings for Mendoza’s two children, who are now in seventh and 10th grade. The benefit has been authorized by the school board.
  • $622 for a rental car for Maufas during a five-day conference in 2009 near Allentown, Pa.

Thankfully, my children don’t attend San Francisco schools. But I suspect the parents of those schools are being squeezed just like we are with required “donations” every year at registration time. With this kind of shenanigans, I would definitely think twice before donating one cent to the schools. And why, a year later is Kim-Shree still on the school board? After last year’s revelations, I figured she would quietly resign her position. Imagine my surprise when I read that her lavish spending on the taxpayers’ dime has continued and she’s actually running for re-election this year. Unreal.

The Red & Black Cafe

Dear readers, I don’t want you to feel neglected. I haven’t posted much lately – just been busy. So here’s a little tidbit to keep you happy.

The Reader’s Digest version: On May 18, 2010, a Portland police officer went into the Red & Black Cafe and bought a cup of coffee. He was stopped by a citizen who struck up a conversation. While they were talking, one of the owners told the officer to leave. You can read all about it here or here. Definitely not the end of the world – looking at their website, it’s another Socialist Berkeley-inspired establishment. What I found laughable was this:

“I felt just really uncomfortable — just really uncomfortable about it and I felt many of our customers and co workers would not feel safe in a space with a uniformed police officer with a gun,” said Red and Black Cafe co-owner John Langley.

I would like to encourage Mr. Langley to reflect upon his customers and co-workers – in other words, the people he surrounds himself with – if they feel unsafe around a police officer. Your average citizen isn’t going to have those feelings. Anyway, the obligatory Boycott the Red & Black Cafe has sprung up on Facebook and if you’d like to express your feelings to Mr. Langley, his scared co-workers or the Red & Black Cafe, here’s their contact info:

Ed Schultz Doesn’t Like Bastards

Filed under: News,Politics — The Deranged One @ 1:40 pm

Radio Equalizer got this fine piece. If he was laughing or being sarcastic, I could see Mr. Schultz’ comments being taken out of context. However, that’s obviously not the case.

So who wants to start taking bets on how long he will continue to be on MSNBC?

The Health Care Debacle

Filed under: News,Politics — The Deranged One @ 11:04 pm

I’ve been utterly disgusted by the back and forth over the health care debate. But this sums it up quite nicely:

Let me get this straight. Obama’s health care plan will be written by a committee whose head says he doesn’t understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn’t read it, signed by a president who smokes, funded by a treasury chief who did not pay his taxes, overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that is trillions of dollars in debt. What possibly could go wrong?

Kim-Shree Maufas and the School District Credit Card

Filed under: California,News — The Deranged One @ 5:15 pm

On occasion, I like to peruse the San Francisco Chronicle. Being based in San Francisco, it has some of the most entertaining and ludicrous stories. Would you expect any different from a place like San Francisco?

Today’s edition was no exception. The headline story was that Kim-Shree Maufas, the President of the San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education has a bit of a spending problem. She used her district issued Diners Club credit card for the following:

Board President Kim-Shree Maufas charged $4,300 on the district’s Diners Club card for a wide range of personal purchases. They included more than $2,000 for a cultural exchange trip to China, $196 for tickets to the Florida Epcot theme park, $40 for black Crocs, a $125 car battery and a $162 car windshield, $160 in U.S. passport processing fees, a $37 medical visit in Los Angeles and $3 for Apple iTunes.

In addition, Maufas charged $3,000 on the district’s Diner’s Club for food and beverages to conduct meetings across San Francisco, although the people whom she met and specific district purposes typically were not divulged. The records showed that she was often a big tipper with taxpayer funds. In more than 40 instances, a taxi or restaurant tip exceeded 20 percent of the final bill.

Expenses paid by the district included workday meetings at a Starbucks near her place of employment, charges that at times included only a single beverage and a single pastry or sandwich. Receipts submitted to the district rarely explained the purpose of the meetings or who was present.

Records show Maufas frequently met at Starbucks, with more than $300 spent at the chain for business purposes. Receipts show many of the meetings were conducted at the Divisadero Street Starbucks near UCSF, where she worked at the time. Times of the meetings ranged from early morning to midafternoon and those she met with typically were not identified.

She has since repaid the district (well she didn’t repay the interest) for the charges and in an interview, “There definitely was a misunderstanding about how we use our credit card, but we have had training on that,” she said. “You can rest assured that won’t happen again.”

You needed to be trained on how to use the card for district expenses? What misunderstanding was there? It’s called embezzlement. But when the heat was turned up by the reporter who wanted to continue the interview, she said she wouldn’t be available for several more months. Wow, must be really busy slashing budgets since the district is losing $51 million over the next two years.

I’m not at all surprised by this. What I found funny was Kim-Shree’s campaign website specifically her “platform.”

3. Responsible Budgeting:
Establish an open budget process that ensures resources meant for the
schools actually reach the classroom.

* Independent Audit of District finances (bi-annually).
* Ensuring that money reaches the classroom.
* Equity for schools with greatest needs.
* Increase fundraising efforts and district support for schools fundraising efforts.
* Advocating for a funding stream for our schools that partners with our citizenry
and electorate along with encouraging philanthropic support.
* Pursing state and federal monies are students are entitled to.
* Sunshine and accurate accounting.
* No more unchecked expense accounts for administration or board members.
* Comply with the law and reduce lawsuits litigation against the district for not
complying with special education requirements.

I wonder why her platform doesn’t apply to her. And I wonder how long that webpage will exist before it vanishes.

In the grand scheme of things, it’s not a huge amount of money and Kim-Shree has repaid it (well, not the interest.) But it’s wrong to use an employer’s credit card to purchase niceties such as $300 at Starbucks, iTunes and Epcot tickets especially when it’s at taxpayer expense. Thankfully, my children don’t attend the San Francisco Unified School District. However, in our district, they’re hitting me up for pencils, crayons, paper, etc. I imagine the SF schools are doing the same. Yet here is the board president wearing out her credit card to buy coffee. If it were the private sector, she would’ve been fired faster than she knew what hit her. Based on her arrogance and hypocrisy, she needs to do the right thing and resign immediately.

Acceptable Sexual Assault

Filed under: News,Society — The Deranged One @ 2:19 am

Yesterday, I wrote about Whoopi Goldberg and her misguided view of Roman Polanski’s rape of a 13 year old. A little bit ago, I was watching the news and learned that apparently there are a bunch of folks in Hollywood and France who find it more reprehensible that he was arrested than his admitted act. They’ve even begun a petition protesting his arrest.

I’ve always thought that certain members of the “entertainment” community were in their own little world, but I obviously underestimated them. Let’s think this one through. At the time, the victim was 13. Polanski was 44. He plied her with champagne, a quaalude performed some oral sex, intercourse and then anal intercourse. All the while, she was telling him to stop and take her home and was afraid. Sounds like rape to me.

Now, just for the sake of argument, suppose instead of a famous movie director, Polanksi was a music teacher. Instead of a music lesson, he gave the same 13 year old, alcohol and drugs and performed the same acts on him. He was arrested and pled guilty then fled the country before sentencing. Would the same celebrities be up in arms about his arrest? Or, if his arrest even popped up on the radar, would they denounce him as a pedophile and laud his arrest? I suspect there wouldn’t be one protest, although who knows, maybe in their twisted world it would still be okay.

The whole thing just leaves a bad taste in my mouth – how can anybody excuse the rape of a 13 year old?

When is Sodomizing a 13 Year Old Not Rape?

Filed under: News,Society — The Deranged One @ 11:25 am

So Whoopi doesn’t think it’s “rape-rape” to drug and sodomize a 13 year old? Sounds like rape to me. What the hell is wrong with society? And why do we put these idiot celebrities up on a pedestal?

So, the rest of the United States is finally getting to see the trainwreck of a Representative that California has been witnessing/experiencing in Nancy Pelosi. I’m sorry you’ve been subjected to her.

I typically don’t get fired up over politics – it’s just not my style. Don’t get me wrong, I’m often disgusted by the whole lot of them. But this gem pissed me off. If you don’t feel like reading her blather, here’s what perked up my ears:

These disruptions are occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views — but of the facts themselves. Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American. Drowning out the facts is how we failed at this task for decades.

Huh, that’s interesting. Thank goodness no Democrats have ever participated in such behavior. But it gets better – as I’m sure anybody who has ventured out from under their rocks in the past week have heard, the White House website posted this last week:

There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to

So, let me get this straight – any dissent is Un-American? Anybody who speaks out is Un-American? Can you imagine the screams if the Bush administration had asked for an email anytime somebody dissented on either the Iraq or Afghanistan wars? And what the hell is the White House planning to do with that list of dissenters to their plan? That sounds a touch un-American to me. Rather Orwellian. And I hope their spam filters are tuned up.

Anyway, in some article somwhere or other, I stumbled across this link in the comments section. Hmm, who looks organized and who looks like the average Joe off the street? Wait, I’m sure Nancy will tell us that’s part of the evil plot – as you organize those un-American Americans, make sure they look like the average citizen. But wait, what’s this? Yeah, that’s really going to help convince me. Shame on you, Nancy. I do wonder though, will Nancy’s weekly botox injections be covered by the new plan? Oh wait, that’s right, she has a plan that puts this one to shame.

A spokesman for Speaker Nancy Pelosi demurred when asked if she would sign up for a government-run plan.

Edit: I just found a job. Sweet!

Probable Swine Flu

Filed under: News,Society — The Deranged One @ 11:16 am

I just wanted to report to my intrepid readers that I sneezed the other night. I have no doubt that it will be reported tonight on the local news as yet another case of “probably swine flu.” I expect Katie Couric to arrive shortly to set up camp on my front lawn in case I happen to sneeze again. More to follow….

And for your viewing pleasure

There Were No Victims

Filed under: California,News — The Deranged One @ 4:24 pm

Remember the idiot (Dr. Mark Anderson of Woodland, CA) who performed very thorough breast exams while practicing his dentistry? Well, he didn’t help himself when he was filmed on camera saying there were no victims. I guess he’ll have plenty of time to think about his non-victims since he was sentenced today to 6 years in prison. Nice.
